Internal Controls Lead Auditor

Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday
Location: Flexible to Minneapolis, Duluth, NEMN Markets


The primary purpose of this position is to evaluate the adequacy of the Bank’s internal control structure to protect the assets of Park State Bank. The focus of this position is to conduct independent audits of financial records and perform tests on procedures to establish the validity and reliability of operating systems, procedural controls and resulting records.


Internal Audit

  1. Works with Chief Compliance / Risk Officer to develop and implement a detailed risk-based audit plan and program based on internal controls throughout the Bank. May use third parties as a resource especially as it relates to FDICIA requirements.
  2. Maintains a comprehensive internal audit program, which includes regular audit and control procedures and activities for branches and departments of the Bank. May use third parties as a resource especially as it relates to FDICIA requirements.
  3. Employee Monitoring – Develops a monthly schedule to ensure all employee deposit accounts are reviewed on an annual frequency. Deposit accounts will also include where the employee is an authorized signer.
  4. Discusses overall audit findings and recommendations with management immediately after completing an audit area.
  5. Reviews and appraises policies and procedures for safeguarding Bank assets. Develops or recommends new or revised internal audit policies, methods and procedures where needed, including the updating of the Bank’s Internal Audit Charter and Policy.
  6. Schedules, prepares agenda and facilitates the quarterly Audit Committee meetings.
  7. Obtain all audits performed on behalf of the bank including, BSA, IT, Compliance, and Risk.
  8. Submits summary of audits along with written audit reports obtained to the Audit Committee, including findings, analyses, conclusions and recommended actions.
  9. Backs up the Chief Compliance / Risk Officer in maintaining a log of findings and resolutions from all sources. All sources would include internal and external audits as well as regulatory exams.

Special Projects

  1. Assists Controller, Chief Compliance / Risk Officer, regulatory examiners and other external and internal auditors with other projects/duties as needed.

Internal Controls Resource

  1. Assists in fostering an understanding of the risk management process and communicating risk management and control concepts to bank personnel.
  2. Assists other departments in evaluating and setting up internal controls to prevent fraudulent activity.
  3. Helps to design training programs for bank employees on best practices and as it may pertain to new regulations as they pertain to internal controls.
  4. Coordinates and manages meetings, as needed, with other departments to share information and resources.
  5. Responsible to become knowledgeable about and adhere to all relevant accounting/auditing and compliance regulations (as it affects your department).

Education & Experience:

  • A high school diploma is required.  Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, finance or business administration; MBA, Certified public accountant (CPA) or certified internal auditor (CIA) designation highly preferred.

  • Exceptional communication skills (written and oral) are required.  General banking knowledge is required. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.  Previous lending experience is preferred.  Experience with conducting training is a plus. 

Other skills:

  • Proficiency and experience in application of internal auditing theory, standards, procedures, controls and techniques, and in accounting principles and techniques.
  • Good understanding of human relations and the ability to maintain satisfactory relationships with auditees.
  • One or two years of progressively more responsible work experience in a financial institution preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of debits and credits and how they go through the system.
  • Basic computer skills as well as knowledge of all office machinery.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to define and solve problems.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple demands in a timely manner.


Will need to be able to handle stressful situations and function in a very fast-paced environment while remaining calm and precise.  Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and enjoy working with the public. Will need to communicate in a clear, concise, and pleasant manner.

May, on occasion, have to work longer hours than scheduled.

Must be able to meet deadlines, multi-task and adjust priorities as necessary. Must possess strong organizational, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with all levels of management and the Bank’s vendors.  Must be a self-starter who challenges existing processes and can identify and implement efficiencies and cost-saving solutions. Will have access to and knowledge of all employees’ accounts, customer information, and the bank’s finances, so the ability to keep information confidential is extremely important.

The employee will be working in an indoor office setting in a light work situation (exerting up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects). Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and be able to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity equipment. Employee frequently communicates with employees, customers and vendors. Will be required to travel to branches within region on a weekly basis, so must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Must be able to exchange accurate information both orally and written in English. Employee will be required to travel to branches located within the region.
